How to prevent tick bites

The best prevention would be to avoid any tick area. If such areas cannot be avoided, the exposure to ticks can be reduced by:
  • Wearing long sleeved tops and long pants
  • Tucking pant bottoms into top of socks
  • Wearing light-colored clothing (so ticks can be seen and removed easily)
  • Applying insect repellent to exposed skin

If you find a tick on yourself remove it as soon as possible to prevent infection. Preserve the tick and have it tested for any diseases.

Possible vaccination for TBE

By getting a TBE virus vaccination, deadened agents will be injected into your body. They cannot cause an infection but support your body to build antibodies which can then protect you when being contagioned with the virus in the future. This is called immunization because your body has to get active in order do fight against the virus. Unfortunately this protection only lasts for a couple of years so it is necessary to refresh the vaccination regularly.

If there is enough time for a complete basic immunization against the TBE virus you will have to get three injections in one year. If there is only little time left get protection, a short-term vaccination will do and you will get three injections within 21 days. But then you'll have to be vaccinated again after 12-18 months. There is no vaccination for the Lyme disease available yet.
If you want to know more about the vaccination, please contact your doctor.
